Lord Botetourt High will be the site of a Region 3D doubleheader tonight beginning at 5:30 p.m. when the boys host Cave Spring. The girls will follow with a 7:15 p.m. game against Hidden Valley.
Both games are region semifinals, with the winners advancing to region championship games on Friday at the sites of the highest remaining seeds. Region champions will play in state semifinal games next Tuesday, with the state championship games scheduled for June 26, all at home sites.
The boys came in as the fourth seed and they played host to fifth seeded Northside for a quarterfinal game on Monday at LB. The Cavaliers scored twice in the first 20 minutes of the game and held off the Vikings for a 2-1 win.
“During the regular season we lost to this team 2-1 and then tied them last week, 1-1,” said LB coach Tim Wright. “We knew it was going to be a battle.”
Chase Peery was credited with the first goal off his throw-in as a result of a deflection off a Northside player. Jordan Thornhill had the second goal, collecting a loose ball in the penalty area and finding the back of the net. Meanwhile, Northside didn’t have a shot until the 30th minute of play.
“Coming out with a high pressure offense off the bat seemed to catch Northside off guard,” said Wright.
Tonight’s opponent, Cave Spring, came in as the eighth seed but the Cavs beat ninth seeded Carroll County in a play-in game Saturday, 5-0, then defeated top-seeded Bassett on Monday, 3-0.
The LB girls are the top seed in their tournament with a perfect 10-0 regular season record, topping it off with a 6-0 win over Northside in last week’s regular season finale. Briana Myers led LB with a three-goal hat trick and the jayvees also finished undefeated.
The varsity kept their record clean on Monday when they opened Region 3D play with a 5-1 win over Cave Spring. Fourth seeded Hidden Valley defeated Abingdon, 7-0, and will take on LB in tonight’s second game of the doubleheader. Second seeded Magna Vista and sixth seeded Christiansburg are in the other semifinal.
If the Botetourt girls win tonight they’ll host the regional championship Friday.
