Deputies from the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Willow Wood Drive, Roanoke (in the Blue Ridge area) at 11:53 a.m. on Wednesday, June 9 for a domestic dispute. Upon arriving, they encountered a man exiting the house carrying what appeared to be a gas can. Deputies gave orders to the man and he complied and was detained.
The deputies then observed smoke and flames coming from inside the house, and the fire departments and rescue units were dispatched at 12:07 p.m. for an active structure fire. There were no other occupants in the residence. The house was a total loss.
The suspect, James E. Wade, 24, of Big Island, is being held in the Botetourt-Craig Regional Jail without bond on charges of malicious wounding, arson of an occupied dwelling, domestic assault and property damage. The incident is still under investigation.
