Wayne Edward (Shorty) Meador, 84, passed away peacefully at his home on November 1, 2024 in Grub Hollow (Blue Ridge) with his family by his side.

He was born on August 3, 1940 to the late George and Rena Meador. He was also preceded in death by sisters Dot Helms and Kathy Williamson; grandsons Leon Campbell and Jeremiah Campbell.

Wayne retired from Roanoke Electric Steel after 25 plus years of service. He had several hobbies including hunting, fishing, gardening, and mowing his grass. Most importantly he loved spending time with his family, especially his beloved wife Marion. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, best friend, hunting partner, and much more.

Wayne is survived by his beloved wife Marion of 45 years; his children, Cindy Ruff of Roanoke, Lynn Meador of Blue Ridge, Bryan Meador (Beth) of Fort Mill, S.C., and Alan Meador (Jaime) of Spring Hope, N.C.; his grandchildren, Crystal Mabry (Jeffrey), Chandler Meador, Lauren Meador, Destiny Meador, Jacob Meador, Andrew Meador and Samantha Shultis; and great-grandchildren, Savannah, Brittany, Casey and Zaira.

He is also survived by siblings, Shirley Thomas, Keith Meador, Clayton Meador (Faye), Kenny Meador (Bonnie), George A. Meador (Greta), Sue Gordon (Bruce), Ralph Meador (Robin), Jan May (Gary) and Barry Meador; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Wayne was always proud of his garden, and loved canning with Marion. It was well known that nobody was leaving his house without a jar of his famous pickles, a carton of eggs or some of his very popular deer jerky. He always made sure to plant more than enough to share with his family and neighbors. He was a kind man that would give you the shirt off his back without a hesitation. He was a great storyteller and you were always guaranteed a good laugh.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 6, at 10 a.m. at Oakey’s East Chapel, 5188 Cloverdale Road. A graveside service will be held at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens, 7271 Cloverdale Road, immediately following the service.

The family is grateful for countless friends and colleagues who prayed for and supported Wayne throughout his life and especially during the past year as he bravely fought cancer. Thank you to Blue Ridge Cancer Care and Good Samaritan Hospice Care for their support, especially Nadia, his hospice nurse. The family would also like to thank their dear neighbors Paula and Steve Kessler for their friendship, love and support during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice Care, 4751 Cove Road, Roanoke, 24017. Arrangements by Oakey’s East Chapel, 540-977-3909.
