Family members of John Shank stand with the memorial stone placed in Fairview Cemetery last Saturday morning.

On Saturday morning, Oct. 4, local nonprofit organization Sirens and Salutes was joined by the family of John Shank to place a memorial stone in Fairview Cemetery.

Shank, a game warden, was killed in the line of duty in Buchanan in 1932. He was 70 at the time of his death, and had served with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries for 10 years prior.

He was then survived by his wife, two sons, his sisters, and grandchildren. Family members Greg Stinnett, Randy and Dawn Shank, Susan and Chuck Clemmonds, Jessica Jones, and Department of Wildlife Resources officers were present for the ceremony. Bill Price, co-founder of Sirens and Salutes, shared a few words before the family placed the stone last Saturday morning.

For more information about Sirens and Salutes, visit the organization’s Facebook page or by visiting sirensandsalutes.org.
