Miller leads field, Knight boys into state meet Saturday at The Plains

The James River boys won the Class 2A, Region C cross country meet at Green Hill Park last week. The Knights will now advance to the Class 2A state meet at The Plains this Saturday at 11:15 a.m.

River scored 37 points and had the individual champion in Will Miller. Radford was second with 63 points and Gretna took third with 105. The top three schools advanced to this week’s state meet.

Miller had a time of 15:34.7 to easily win the regional. The next fastest runner, Zachary Longwell of Appomattox, was over a minute behind at 16:43.

Dalton Simmons was second for River and sixth overall at 17:12. Also scoring for the Knights were Zach Hodges in ninth, Noel Preece in 10th and William Fowler in 11th as James River had five of the first 11 over the line among 81 total runners.

The James River girls were sixth. Floyd County won the girls regional title and Radford and Glenvar also advanced to the state.

Grace Montgomery was River’s top runner with a 22nd place finish. Also scoring were Alyson McCullough in 25th, Tessa Jones in 26th, Meaghan Hix in 55th and Daisy Montgomery in 64th. None of the James River girls qualified for the state meet.
