Georgia Miller, a junior at James River High School, finished third in a VAHS cycling race in Stokesville, Va., on April 26.
In the last two miles Miller moved up from sixth to find herself in a fierce battle for third. As the competitors came out of the woods Georgia attacked on the final quarter-mile stretch to the finish. On the outside, slower line, she overpowered her opponent to get a bike length ahead, enabling her to dive into the right hand corner ahead of her and cross the line in third place.
“This was a strong field and I was hoping for a top 10,” said Miller. “My legs felt good and I found myself in a position to go for third.”
Georgia has been racing with a VAHS composite team, Roanoke Star Cycling, for six years. Her coach, Warren Carswell, said, “I’ve had the pleasure of coaching Georgia over these years. Her technical skills and strength continue to improve with each season.”
Last fall Miller finished in 10th place out of 45 JV girls in NICA Regionals held in Elkton, Md. Georgia is also a James River High School wrestler during the winter and won two VHSL-sanctioned tournaments during the 2024-25 season, making her the first female at JRHS to win a VHSL tournament. When asked how she balances the two sports, she said, “I think the two complement each other and make me a balanced athlete. I hope to be a dual sport athlete in college and am currently visiting universities that offer both women’s wrestling and mountain biking.”
