DALEVILLE – During the January Board of Supervisors meeting, members of the Botetourt Monuments and Memorials Committee received a token of thanks for their effort and time for serving on the county.
Each member was award a special coin, a custom produced “challenge coin” as a lasting memento of the committee’s work and accomplishments.
The symbolism, said Stephen Clinton, a supervisor and chairman of the committee, is obvious; the Confederate National Flag (expressly not the Battle Flag), crossed with the U.S. Flag, with an olive branch wreath in the background. The Latin translates as “From the Past, A Better Future.
“The County traditionally does not issue certificates or medals or anything like that for committee service, so I arranged and bankrolled this myself. No public funds,” he said. “Aside from the connection to the Monument, it strikes me that the coins – and their theme of unity — are very timely for us as a nation, given recent events.”
