BALMER, Robert F.
Robert Frederick (“Bob,” “Ol Buc”) Balmer, 80, of Cloverdale, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2018.
He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Balmer; mother, Hope Balmer; sister, Helen Bowersox; son-in-law Richard Pitsenbarger; and grandson, Benjamin Pitsenbarger.
He was a member of Parkway House of Prayer Church.
Survivors include his daughter, Suzanne Brown of Stuart, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Tammie Balmer of Blue Ridge; grandchildren, Joshua Pitsenbarger, Jared Pitsenbarger, Tyler Balmer and Heidi Balmer; and special friend, Eva Peck.
Bob’s funeral service was held at 10 am, Saturday, April 7, in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with the Rev. Gareth. Interment was in the Wheatland Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family received friends Friday, April 6, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 at the funeral home. BOLTON, Sandra L.
Sandra Sue Layman Bolton, 74, of Daleville, passed following a battle with cancer, with her family and friends surrounding her, on April 8, 2018. She loved life and laughter, and will be missed.
She is survived by her husband, Benton; her son, Stephen, his wife, Stephanie, and their children, Ian and Caroline; her son, Brian; her brothers, Jimmy and Allen Layman; and many close cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Having grown up on her family’s farm, she lived in Daleville for virtually her entire life. She was a devoted, lifelong member of Daleville Church of the Brethren, frequently holding leadership positions at the congregational and district levels.
She wanted to especially thank her family and friends for all their love, compassion, and care throughout her illness. She also appreciated all that the staff of Good Samaritan Hospice did to help her through this difficult time.
Visitation will be at Oakey’s East Chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 13. Her family and friends will share in a celebration of her life at Daleville Church of the Brethren at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 14. Officiating will be Pastor Tom Powers and Pastor David Shumate.

JONES, Frank E.
Frank Erskine Jones, 80, of Blue Ridge, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2018.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Ingledew Jones; parents, Tracey Miller Jones and Mary Alice Woods Jones. Frank was a US Army Veteran serving from 1959 to 1965. He was a diesel mechanic and had worked for several companies.
Survivors include his daughter, Sandra J. Stubbs of Blue Ridge; son, Eric Jones of Bedford; grandchildren, Dean Stubbs and Ally Jones; brother, John Jones of Roanoke.
The family would like to thank the staff of Carrington Place of Botetourt Commons for all of their care and love shown Frank and Lucille during their stay there.
Frank’s funeral service will be held at 12 noon, Wednesday, April 11, in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Hwy, Buchanan, with the Rev. Morris Bennett officiating. Interment will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Roanoke with military honors. The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 11, from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. KELLY, Rex S.
Rex Stevens Kelly, 92, of Buchanan, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2018.
Rex was a member of the Buchanan Baptist Church serving as Deacon, Moderator, and Treasurer, a member of the Buchanan Volunteer Fire Dept. serving as Chief for 10 years and helped organize the first Firemen’s Carnival to help fund the department, a Charter Member of the Buchanan Rescue Squad for over 25 years, member of the Buchanan Town Council and Mayor for 13 years, member of the Buchanan Lions Club, former President and Trustee of Weekday Religious Education, owned and operated the G&R Restaurant for many years, an over-the-road truck driver for Red Lion Trucking, and had retired from James River Limestone.
The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of Springtree Rehab Center, and the support of church members, friends and family for their care of Rex over the years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, R.D. and Martha Stevens Kelly; sister, Nancy Kelly; brothers and sisters-in-law, Burger and Eunice Kelly, Dickey and Carol Kelly, and Jimmy Kelly.
Rex is survived by his wife of 67 years, Gay Sexton Kelly; daughters, Lisa “Chip” Kelly and Amy “Chigger” Kelly.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 8, in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mike Woody, the Rev. Darrell E. Naff, and the Rev. Brad Turner officiating. Interment was in the Mill Creek Cemetery. The family received friends Saturday, April 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. SCAGGS, Harvey N.
Harvey Nelson Scaggs, 88, of Mechanicsville, Va. passed away on March 3, 2018.
He was born August 16, 1929 in Botetourt County to the late Albert Maynard Scaggs and Lydia Keith Scaggs. He was recently preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Betty Keesee Scaggs; sisters, Katherine Martin, Geneva Belcher, Betty Ann Moran; brother, Lewis Scaggs; and daughter-in-law, Ruby Scaggs. He graduated from Troutville High School, served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, and worked for IBM for 34 years. Harvey was loved by his many friends and family and will be remembered for his love and devotion to God, Betty and his family.
He is survived by daughters, Lori Bradley (David) and Karen Barr (Gregg); son, Timothy Scaggs; grandchildren, Nathaniel Bradley (Jocelyn), Zachary Bradley (Scottie), Andrea Wyatt (Wren), Elizabeth Barr and Joshua Scaggs; and great-grandchild, Oliver Bradley; brothers, Curtis and Robert Scaggs; sister, Darlene Painter, and many loving nieces and nephews.
A joint service will be held for Harvey and Betty at Northside Baptist Church, Mechanicsville on Saturday, April 28, at 3 pm. Receiving of friends will begin at 2 p.m., with a reception following the service.
The family wishes to thank the staff of The Crossings Assisted Living Community and Heartland Hospice for their compassionate and loving care. Harvey and Betty will be missed by family and friends alike.
