FRIER, James H.
James H. Frier, 82, of Blue Ridge, passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2018.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James C. Frier and Florence M. Frier; and his sister, Mary Jane Martin.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Patricia Frier; five daughters, Sherrie Setchel and Michael, Brenda Amann and Juergen, Pam Sink and Buck, Lori Gibson and Cecil, and Robyn Vaughn and special friend, Gary. James is also survived by his brother, Don Frier and Linda; sisters, June Johnson and Sara McConnell; brother-in-law, Paul Martin; grandchildren, Ashley Pratt and Andy, Josh Setchel and fiancée, Lauren, Derek Gibson, Kristin Sink and Max Vaughn; great-grandson, Nolan Pratt; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
James was born on July 19, 1935, in Oneida, N.Y. He attended Canastota Central Schools in Canastota, N.Y. James then graduated from Alfred State College in New York State. He served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958.
James worked as an accountant from 1959 to 1979 for Warren Brothers Co., a division of Ashland Oil Inc. in Syracuse, N.Y. In 1979, he moved his family to Botetourt County and worked as a cost analyst for Branch & Associates. From 1981 to 1994 James worked as a cost accountant manager for BellSouth Communication Systems. He retired in 1994 and then helped with the Frier home daycare.
The family would like to thank all his doctors, nurses, caregivers, special caregiver, Tamara, and hospice during his battle with dementia.
Jim was an avid Syracuse fan who loved to travel, spend time with his family and work in his yard. He will be sadly missed but we celebrate that he is now in his Heavenly home.
A period of visitation was held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 13, at Oakey’s East Chapel in Roanoke. A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, at the funeral home. Interment followed in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens, Cloverdale Road, Roanoke. HOUSMAN, Gracie H.
Gracie Nadine Higgins Housman, 83, of Buchanan, passed away Friday, April 13, 2018.
Gracie was born April 20, 1934 in Rockbridge County to the late Floyd Elmer Higgins and Clara Clark Higgins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carry Eugene “Gene” Housman; sisters and brothers-in-laws, Alma “Jo” and John Tyler, Velma “Snooks” and Nelson Entsminger; brother and sister-in-law, Floyd “Frank” and Delia “Toots” Higgins.
Survivors include her feline companion, Midnight; two stepsons, David (Dreama) Housman and Barry Housman; very special great niece, Summer Clemmer of Lexington; several nieces and nephews; dear friends, Edith “EE” Dudley of Eagle Rock and Madeline “Bugs” Markham of Buchanan, and her Lithia United Methodist Church Family. Gracie enjoyed the outdoors…gardening, farming, and playing softball. She also enjoyed bowling.
Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in Lithia United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday, April 17, from 6 to 8 pm at Botetourt Funeral Home. YOUNG, Susan B.
Susan Jane Brown Young, 77, of Buchanan, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at Raleigh Court Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Susan was born August 19, 1940 and was the daughter of the late William R. and Grace Finley Brown. She attended Thiel College and was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority. Susan was a lifelong avid horsewoman, accomplished trainer, teacher, judge, and equestrian. She was a member of multiple horseman’s associations.
In addition to her parents, Susan was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Franklin Young in 1996. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Cary Young of Johnson City, Tenn., Kevin Young of Jonesborough, Tenn., Craig and Tiffany Young of Chambersburg, Pa,; daughter, Kristie Young of Buchanan; grandchildren: Whitney Young, William Young, Brendon Young, Dylan Marko, Lauren Young, Grace Young, and Carson Young; brother and sister-in-law, Edward R. and Susan Brown of Ormond Beach, Fla.; daughter-in-law. Tamera Young of Kingsport, Tenn.; and “adopted” daughter, Becky Broughman of Buchanan.
A celebration of Susan’s life was held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 16 at Rader Funeral Home, Daleville. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery in Buchanan. The family received friends at the funeral home Sunday, 2-5 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to New Freedom Farm, 6118 Lithia Road, Buchanan, 24066.
