Lyles says this election is a matter of time
Editor:
With the various challenges facing Botetourt County Schools, one thing is very clear. Whoever is elected in each of the three districts will have plenty of work ahead of them, along with their more senior partners, come January.
When I decided that I would run for the Valley District seat, I did so knowing that it would be more than a part-time responsibility. Being a responsible public servant requires being available, more than just regularly scheduled meetings. I decided that because of the flexibility of my work schedule I can give the citizens the time they deserve. To me, being a member of the Botetourt County School Board comes with a serious commitment. Regular attendance of board meetings should not only be expected, but required of each board member. I also believe that each board member has a responsibility to work closely with our counterparts on the Board of Supervisors, as well as our legislators. The ability to maintain an open dialogue with our other elected officials, as well as keeping lines of communication open within the districts are an important piece of service.
I have promised to look for new ways to be engaged with my constituents if I am fortunate enough to be elected. I look forward to holding mobile office hours in coffee shops, holding Facebook live events, and participating in school functions. If given the chance to lead, I pledge to lead from the front, not the back of the bench. I pledge to be proactive and not reactive.
We have real challenges that are going to require real leadership and that means being present for more than an hour or two each month. Our students, teachers, and parents deserve better. Our taxpayers deserve better. If you agree and live in the Valley District, I ask for your vote on November 5.
