June 30, 1945 – August 13, 2025

Norman “Butch” Jackson Piner, 80, of Cloverdale, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of family and friends. Born June 30, 1945, in Roanoke, Butch was the son of the late Mary Williams and Samuel Piner, and the grandson of the late Ernest and Pernie Williams.

In 1976, Butch married the love of his life, Nancy Brogan Piner, and proudly became stepfather to Karen and Glen Brogan. Together they shared countless memories on family trips to Disney World, Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Punta Gorda, Fla. Butch’s happiest moments were spent with family, especially his granddaughters Holly Brogan and Amanda Maggio, who lovingly considered him more of a father than a grandfather. From making sure they collected every Beanie Baby in the 1990s to helping them get their first cars, Butch always went above and beyond for them.

He is also survived by his children, Norman Piner Jr., Ernest Piner, and William Piner of West Virginia; stepchildren, Karen Brogan and Glen Brogan; grandchildren, Holly Brogan, Amanda Maggio, Shawna Brogan, Jennifer Brogan, and Kristen Brogan; grandson-in-law, Buddy Deaner; great-grandchildren, Chance, who was his little buddy, Eli and Abi Deaner, Waverly, Remington, Everest, and Traveler Brogan Kingery; and siblings, Larry Piner, Denny Piner, Jeffrey Piner, Jackie Piner, Doris Piner, Tereasa Piner, Wanda Piner, Jennifer Piner, and Piner Piner.

Butch had a passion for cars, whether it was buying them, fixing them, trading them, or lending a hand to anyone in need of a repair. After retirement, he enjoyed setting up at Happy’s Flea Market, where he made many lifelong friends. He was blessed with wonderful neighbors, Susan, Betty, Jim, Jeff, Spencer, Brian, and Cindy, who were more like family and supported him greatly, especially during his illness.

He loved animals, from his longtime dog Dude to his granddaughters’ dog Happy, and even the stray cats he fed until they found homes. Butch also cherished Christmas, taking joy in decorating the outside of his home for the season.

Above all, Butch will be remembered for his generosity, his devotion to family, and the way he made sure his loved ones always had what they needed. His impact on the lives of those who knew him will be felt for generations.

The family received friends at Rader Funeral Home on Monday, August 18, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. A graveside service followed at 2 p.m. at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens at the Mausoleum, with burial following the service. Pastor Tracy Terry officiated.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Butch’s memory to: https://zerocancer.org, prostate cancer non-profit; or      https://www.angelsofassisi.org, Angels of Assisi.
