It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Scott Powell, fondly known to all as Rich, who left us on January 17, 2025, at the age of 57.

Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, on April 2, 1967, Rich and his family moved to Botetourt County in 1979, where he spent much of his life. A proud graduate of Lord Botetourt High School in 1985, Rich’s career with Piedmont Airlines (now American Airlines) began in 1988, where he dedicated 37 years of his life to serving his community and his passengers.

Rich was preceded in death by his beloved father, JL Powell, and in-laws Jan and Sam Mills. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, cherished by his devoted wife of 32 years, Jill Paterno; his mother, Diana Powell; his sister, Sherri; his brother, Brad; and his dear brothers-in-law, Steve (Jennifer) Paterno, Jim (Kelly) Mills, Jeff (Heather) Kenneweg, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Those who knew Rich will forever remember him for his infectious sense of humor and his bright, light-hearted spirit. Rich had a unique gift for making people smile, often calling up family and friends with, “Hey, do you want to hear a good joke?” His laughter was truly the soundtrack of many lives, and his warmth and generosity touched all who had the privilege of knowing him. Whether it was watching his favorite sports teams, relaxing at the beach, playing poker, or sharing treasured moments with his loved ones, Rich lived life to its fullest, always prioritizing time with family and friends.

In this time of sorrow, the family extends their deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love and support. A private service will be held for immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to honor Rich’s memory in a way that would bring a smile to his face: perhaps by placing a bet on FanDuel (but only if it’s for the UVA Cavaliers!).

Rest in peace, Rich. You will be dearly missed, but your humor and love will live on in all of us.
