The Region 3D basketball championship tournaments are scheduled for this week with boys and girls semifinals both scheduled for Thursday. The Lord Botetourt teams played opening round games on Tuesday, but results were too late for publication.
The LB girls came in as the fifth seed in the tournament and opened at fourth seeded Abingdon on Tuesday. The winner of that game will play the winner of a Tuesday game top seeded Bassett and eighth seeded Cave Spring. If Bassett won that game they would host Thursday, but if Cave Spring pulled the upset the Knights would travel to the site of the LB-Abingdon winner. The championship game is Saturday at 1 p.m. at Northside High School and both finalists qualify for the state tournament.
The boys entered as the eighth seed and played at top-seeded Hidden Valley on Tuesday. The winner will play the Tunstall-Abingdon winner Thursday, and LB would have to travel if the Cavaliers won Tuesday. Saturday’s championship is at 3:30 p.m. at Northside, and again both finalists make the state with the region champ getting a quarterfinal home game and the runner-up opening the state on the road.
Both teams finished the regular season with games against Staunton River last Wednesday. The girls lost a close one at home, 56-53, in double overtime after leading by 10 at the half. The girls finished 12-10 in the regular season and Staunton River is the second seed in this week’s region tournament.
The LB boys hammered the Eagles at Staunton River, 66-33, to gain some momentum heading into the post season. LB finished the regular season 7-15.
