Both James River and Lord Botetourt warmed up for the post-season with a track meet at James River High School last Wednesday. Now it gets serious as both teams participate in region meets this Thursday.
James River will compete in the Region 2C meet, scheduled for Christiansburg High School. Meanwhile, LB will be in Moneta for the Region 3D meet at Staunton River High. The Cavaliers are coming off a good day in the Blue Ridge District meet at Franklin County High last Saturday while the Three Rivers District did not have a district meet.
The LB boys won the BRD meet with 134 points, which was 34 more than second place Staunton River. The Cavaliers scored 33 points in the jumps, 30 in the throws, 25 in distance events, 22 in hurdles, 16 in sprints and eight in the relay events. Elijah Rose led LB with 39 points and was named Field Athlete of the Meet while Cavalier coach Chris Caldwell was named the Blue Ridge District Boys Coach of the Year.
Rose won the high jump with a state qualifying height of 6’, won the long jump with a state qualifying leap of 20’ 7”, won the triple jump with a regional qualifying distance, took second in the 110 hurdles, fifth in the 300 hurdles, and was on the second place 4×100 relay with Joey Isaacs, Zion Woody, Dylan Knick and KJ Bratton. Their time was 43.79, a new school record.
Dmetri Toliver won the shot put with a state qualifying toss of 46’ and took second in the discus. Seth Huard was third in both.
Second places went to Bratton in the 100, Knick in the 300 hurdles, Rye Jackson in the 800 and Evan Gates in the 3,200. Thirds went to Isaacs in the 200 and Carter Hudson in the 1,600. Fourth place finishes went to Knick in the 110 hurdles and Jack McDaniel in the long jump. Isaacs was fifth in the 100, Gates was fifth in the 1,600 and Tristan Marshall placed sixth in the 1,600.
The LB girls finished fifth overall with 33 points as William Byrd dominated with 146. Botetourt’s only district champ was Maddie Malue, who won the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.26.
Third places went to Elizabeth Meadows in the 200 and the 4×100 team of Meadows, Alexa Carillo, Annalise Coon, Nicole Paquette and Chloe West. Carillo took fourth in the 100 while Anna Hoover was fourth in the 1,600 and fifth in the 800. Elizabeth Hodges was sixth in the shot put.
