The James River volleyball team was eliminated from the Region 2C tournament and Lord Botetourt was preparing to play in the Region 3D tourney as the paper went to press this week.
James River drew Nelson County for the first round of the Region 2C tourney and the Knights had to go to Lovingston Monday. River led after the first and third sets, but the host Governors were able to pull out the win, 15-25, 25-19, 25-27, 25-15 and 15-11. That ended River’s season at 8-11.
Lord Botetourt was set to open the Region 3D tournament on Tuesday night at home. The Cavaliers are the fourth seed and they drew fifth seeded Bassett to open. The winner will play top-seeded Hidden Valley at the Titans’ gym on Thursday night in a semifinal match. The championship is at the top remaining seed next Tuesday, November 9, and the two finalists both advance to the state Class 3 tournament.
Botetourt came into the regional with a 14-7 overall record after falling to Franklin County in the Blue Ridge District tournament final last week. The Eagles took a three-set win in Rocky Mount, 25-16, 25-18 and 25-22.
“Franklin County really challenged us defensively, which made it difficult to run our offense the way we would have liked,” said LB coach Julie Conner.
Nora Spickard had eight kills, 13 digs and a pair of aces to lead LB. Julianna Stephenson had seven kills, three digs and an ace and Emma Rice had five kills. Anna Dewease had 23 digs and Skylar Morris had 23 assists.
