Donald Earl Rhodes, 87, of Botetourt County, passed away Thursday, November 24, 2022 at The Glebe Rehab Center.
Donald was born in Catawba August 8, 1935 and lived in Botetourt all of his life. He was the son of the late G. Paul and S. Elizabeth Green Rhodes.
Donald served in The United States Army and later retired as an engineering technician with General Electric after 35 years of service. He was a charter member of Mountain View Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and was chairman of the Deacon Committee. A true outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and had a passion for farming.
In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Warren and Frances Rhodes. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Vaughn Rhodes, and son, Jim Rhodes, both of Fincastle; daughter, Debbie (Frank) Ray of Roanoke; grandchildren, Paul (fiancée Abby) Ray, Lily (Josh) Pope, Gloria Ray, Katherine Ray, and Peter Ray; great-grandson, Ezra Pope; brother, Allen (Doris) Rhodes of Roanoke; and several nephews.
Donald’s family would like to extend a thank you to The Glebe Community for the excellent care Donald received, and Good Samaritan Hospice and Palliative Care for their compassionate care for Donald as he transitioned from this life into eternal life with his Savior.
A celebration of Donald’s life will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road, Daleville, with Pastor Charlie Evans officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Cedar Lawn Cemetery. Donald’s family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service Saturday.
