After opening the season with a rout of Floyd County the James River boys dropped their next two soccer games. The Knights lost to Auburn, 5-1, and Waynesboro, 8-1.
The Auburn game was in Riner and the host Eagles got out to an early lead and River never recovered.
“We came out very flat the first six minutes and allowed four unassisted goals,” said coach Jared Whiting. “It’s like we weren’t there to play. Once we finally got going we played well, holding off any more goals in the first half.”
Angel Morales scored River’s goal on a near post shot.
On Friday in Waynesboro the Little Giants came up big.
“This was a tough, tough game for us,” said Whiting. “It was a fast-paced game against a team with very good ball control.”
River trailed just 2-0 at intermission but the Giants continued to add on in the second half.
“As the goals continued to drop for them in the second half we lost our shape and were a bit overwhelmed,” said Whiting. “We play them next after spring break at home and hope to give them a totally different look. The bigger schools are a challenge for us, but we are looking to give them a run for their money.”
Now 1-2, the Knights will look to get even when they host Waynesboro Monday.
