The James River boys dropped a Three Rivers District soccer game to Carroll County in Hillsville Monday, 4-0, to fall to 2-6 in the district. The Knights are 2-9 overall.
River finished a stretch of four games in eight days. After opening last week with a 2-1 loss at Floyd County they dropped a 6-1 decision at Alleghany on Thursday and then lost to Waynesboro at home on Friday, 8-1.
“Tough week for us,” said River coach Jared Whiting. “Back to back nights were rough on us. We came off a bad game and had to jump into another bigger school game.”
River trailed just 3-1 in the second half against Waynesboro before it got away.
“We did pretty well early in the game, keeping it 3-1 part way into the second half, and had the momentum in our favor,” said Whiting. “Soon our tanks went dry and it went away fast. We were struggling to hold on as legs went heavy and our pace went away. I’ll give these guys credit, though. They still gave everything they had regardless of score or fatigue. They’re hard working bunch.”
On Monday Carroll shut out the Knights for their sixth straight loss. Whiting is hoping a little time off will help as River doesn’t play again until Friday when they host Auburn.
“We really need to get in some practice time to try and correct a few things,” he said. “We have had three games in the past three school days with no time for practice. We have several days before our next game so we can hit the practice field and make some adjustments.”
