Brayden Forbes had a three-goal hat trick to lead the James River boys to an opening day soccer win over visiting Floyd County Monday. The Knights took a 7-4 win in Springwood over a Three Rivers District opponent.
“I’m looking forward to what these guys can do this year,” said River coach Jared Whiting. “We graduated almost our entire starting lineup from last year so we are really a fresh team. I’m seeing a lot of energy and hard work coming from this team with improvements daily.”
In addition to Forbes, four other Knights had one goal each, Sam Wilson, Noah Langley, Wyatt Dewhirst and Aiden Bartulis. Knox Taylor had 14 saves in goal as the Knights got the season off to a fast start.
“Practice play and game time play is always different,” said Whiting. “The guys played with high energy, which makes it a fun game to watch. We learned more and have some adjustments to make but things so far look very encouraging.”
River was scheduled to play at Auburn on Tuesday but results were too late for publication. That was a double-header with the girls, who had their season opener Tuesday. The girls are at Bath Thursday and have their home opener Friday against Waynesboro while the boys go to Waynesboro Friday.
