The James River boys played back-to-back soccer games last week and split, with both games resulting in shutouts. The Knights beat Riverheads at home last Thursday, 4-0, then lost at Nelson County a night later, 5-0.
Against Riverheads Josiah Clark had two goals and an assist. Matthew Alderson and Brayden Forbes also had goals and Zach Griswold had an assist.
“We played well and enjoyed a speed advantage, which is always nice,” said River coach Jared Whiting. “We weren’t being pressed hard, which gave us some time to think and settle into our game some.”
On Friday River returned the trip to Nelson County, a team they lost to 5-1 to open the season. This time the Governors took a 5-0 win to drop River to 1-2 on the season.
“We kept it within reach in the first half and had some good opportunities to finish,” said Whiting. “We could have easily been tied at the half. We pushed forward more the second half trying to even things up but also got hurt by their fast break. A few very unlucky bounces late in the second half put a win out of reach but we played a much better game against them this time.”
The Knights were scheduled to play at Northside Tuesday but results were too late for publication. They return from spring break April 2 with a home game against Alleghany.
