The James River softball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Glenvar in Springwood Monday, but it won’t take long to get a rematch. The Knights will play the Highlanders again today, Wednesday, at Glenvar High.
On Monday the Knights celebrated “Senior Night” and their only senior is catcher Cloey Joynes. The Highlanders have five solid seniors and on this night senior Abby Teubert scattered five singles and struck out 12 batters in a strong mound performance for the visitors.
“It was our first game in 11 days and we ran up against a dealing Glenvar pitcher in Abby Teubert,” said River coach Steve Austin. “We were on our heels and struck out way too much, but credit to her.”
Makenna Saville scattered four hits in pitching a complete game for James River. Saville walked four batters and struck out none.
“Makenna Saville had her best outing of the year for us,” said Austin. “She gave us a chance. We got five hits but we only bunched two together in the third inning, when we scored.”
Sydnee Breeding had two hits and scored the lone run for the Knights. Joynes had an RBI single and Caitlyn Downey and Andi Kreklow also had hits for the home team.
Glenvar improved to 14-6 overall and 7-4 in Three Rivers District games with the win while River fell to 10-6 and 1-6. The Knights are at Radford Thursday and still have to make up rained-out district games with Patrick County and Carroll County.
“We have four more games scheduled this week, all on the road,” said Austin. “We need to find a way to get some wins to give ourselves a chance in post season.”
