The James River volleyball team will take a 1-2 record to Hillsville Thursday as they take on host Carroll County in a Three Rivers District match. The Knights split two matches in the past week.
On Monday the girls dropped a three set match to Radford in Springwood, 25-12, 25-19 and 25-16. The Bobcats have one of the better teams in Class 2.
“It was a tough match,” said River coach Davina Copsey. “The girls fought hard and played well. Even though we did not get the win we really did some good work on the court.”
Senior Olivia Thacker had five kills for River while fellow senior Ainsley Simmons had four kills, four blocks and four digs. Rachel Harless had 13 digs and Bailey Mines had 15 assists and a couple aces.
Last Thursday at home the Knights beat Alleghany in three in a district match, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-21. Sophomore Emma Lester led with 11 kills, 13 digs and two aces while Simmons had nine kills, two blocks and four aces. Myla Lester had eight aces and 15 assists and Morgan Marshall had eight kills. Harless and freshman Elly Lackley play well on defense.
“The girls really came together as a team,” said Copsey of her first win as head coach of the River varsity. “I am looking forward to seeing how far they can take it.”
