The James River girls opened the Region 3C basketball tournament Tuesday with a 19-3 record and high hopes for a state tournament berth. The girls were scheduled to host seventh-seeded Radford in a battle of Three Rivers District teams to open the tournament.
Results were too late for publication, but other quarterfinal games on Tuesday found top-seeded Liberty hosting eighth-seeded Patrick County, third-seeded Chatham hosting sixth-seeded Martinsville and fourth-seeded Appomattox hosting fifth-seeded Gretna.
Semifinals are Thursday at the higher seeds, and if James River won Tuesday the girls would host the Chatham-Martinsville winner in Springwood at a time to be determined. The championship game is at the Roanoke College Cregger Center on Saturday at 6 p.m. and both finalists will be in the state tournament, with the Region champ hosting a state quarterfinal game.
