The James River girls traveled to Floyd last Thursday and took a 55-48 basketball win to improve to 9-1 on the season. It was the second Three Rivers District game for the Knights and they’ve won them both.
“A close game throughout,” said River coach Don Eggleston. “Both teams had runs with a chance to win. Floyd is a strong team no matter what their record is.”
Caitlin Canada dominated the paint with 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead River. Jalen Thompson had nine points, Siera Davis had eight, Keira Crawford seven, Audrey Benson six and Jennah Lynch had five in a balanced River attack. The Knights led 25-20 at the half then held off the Buffalo gals despite some good three-point shooting by Floyd.
“We need to work on our three-point defense,” said Eggleston. “Giving up eight in a game is way too many.”
River has a busy schedule with three games this week, beginning with a Tuesday trip to Cave Spring. The Knights will host Radford on Friday, then on Saturday they go to Western Albemarle to play Monticello in the rescheduled “Play for Preemies Showcase” event, which was weathered out last Saturday. It’s a day full of games and the goal is to raise awareness and funds for premature births at the UVA Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville and Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital in Roanoke.
