The James River girls finished 15th among 34 teams that scored in the combined Class 1&2 state track meet at Liberty University last week. The Bruton High girls and boys swept the team titles.
River’s best finish was a third in the triple jump by junior Navaeh VanBuren. She hop, skipped and jumped 35’7” to score six points for River.
Sophomore Kaia Binns scored in two events. She was fourth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.48 for six points and picked up another team point with an eighth place finish in the 300 meters, running a time of 44.65.
Binns, VanBuren, Ripley Barry and Kelsey Firebaugh combined to take sixth in the 4×200 relay. They ran a time of 1:52.57, which was less than two seconds behind the winning time of 1:51.05 by Lee High of Jonesville.
The boys did not score, but Gavin Binns was just one place out of making the finals with a ninth place finish in the 55-meter dash preliminaries. He ran a time of 6.780 and the eighth place finisher made the finals at 6.776, four thousands of a second faster than Gavin.
The Knights now turn to the spring track season where they’ll open April 6 with a meet at William Byrd High School.
