The James River girls finished 19th and the boys were 30th at the Class 1&2 state track meet last week. The Floyd girls and Glenvar boys took team championships as the Three River District swept the top honors at Liberty University in Lynchburg.
The best finish for River was a second place in the girls shot put by senior Emma Francis. She had a toss of 35’7.5”, runner-up to the 36’6” heave by Abby Mikolay of Stuarts Draft.
The girls also scored with a fifth place finish in the 4×200 relay. River’s team of Kelsey Firebaugh, Navaeh Van Buren, Kaia Binns and Kyleigh Mills had a time of 1:53.94 to edge sixth place Bruton by .08 of a second. The winning time was 1:51.93 by Chilhowie.
River’s only points in the boys state meet came from senior Canaan Clark, who took sixth in the shot put. He had a put of 44’ 1.5” to earn two points for the Knights.
Over 40 schools were represented at the meet out of over 100 total schools in Virginia in either Class 1 or 2.
