The James River girls will have their hands full this week as they play the top two teams in the strong Three Rivers District. River was scheduled to play at undefeated Carroll County on Tuesday, then travel to second place Floyd County on Thursday.
The Knights come into the week at 4-13 after dropping games to two district opponents last week. Last Wednesday in Springwood the girls lost to Alleghany, 54-28.
“The final score doesn’t reflect how we played,” said River coach E.D. Schechterly. “The first half was probably the best we’ve played against a district team.”
River trailed by just five at the half but Alleghany hit eight straight points to open the second half. That put the Knights in a hole they couldn’t dig out of.
Madison Brogan had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Knights. Kahliyah Davis had seven points.
On Friday at home the Knights lost to Radford, 52-27. River only had three foul shots in the game to 20 for the visiting Bobcats.
Again, the Knights were right in the game at the half before they let it get away.
“I told the girls that we did well in the first half and we just had to work harder in the second half,” said Schechterly. “It was just 34-22 after the third quarter but then we just ran out of gas. I gave the girls a lot credit for the way they played and also I was told by the coach from Radford how well we played and that we shocked them for keeping it close until the fourth quarter.”
Brogan had seven points and 13 boards for River. Myla Lester had seven points.
After this week’s two road games the Knights will be back home Friday to host Glenvar.
