The James River girls won the Region 2C indoor track championship on Auburn’s outdoor oval last week. The Knights nipped Glenvar by one point to win the region.
River will take five girls to the Class 2 championship meet today at Liberty University. Lord Botetourt athletes were scheduled to compete in the Class 3 meet on Tuesday of this week, also at Liberty.
Holly Hylton had a big day at Auburn to lead the girls to the region title. She won the long jump and triple jump and ran on the winning 4×200 relay team with Morgan Marshall, Vanessa Lima and Ella Wright. It was an amazing performance by Hylton, who returned to practice after having COVID just two weeks ago.
“Her best event is the 500,” said coach Greg Dyer. “She was winning when she fell down just before the finish and couldn’t get up. She was third in the state last year and she was winning easily when she fell.”
Kyleigh Mills finished third in the 500 and qualified for state, as the top three in each event advanced. Lima won the 55-meter dash and was second in the long and third in the triple. Marshall took second in both the high jump and the triple jump.
Wright was also sixth in the 300. Avery Word and Gracie Harlow took fifth and sixth in the shot put. They did not advance, but their points were critical in the one point win over Glenvar.
The girls state meet is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. today.
