It will be a big night of wrestling in Daleville tonight as both Lord Botetourt and James River High Schools participate in Botetourt County Youth Wrestling Night at LBHS.
Glenvar will also be involved, and the Highlanders will open the night by wrestling James River at 6 p.m. A special “Santa Claus” match will follow, then Lord Botetourt will wrestle Glenvar. A Senior Recognition is next, and the night concludes with the featured match, Lord Botetourt against James River.
“All Botetourt County youth wrestlers will get in free,” said LB coach Chuck Burton. “Santa may be making an early appearance as well.”
The Cavaliers are coming off a strong showing in the Turner Ashby Holiday Classic last weekend in Bridgewater. LB finished fourth as a team with Warren County winning, followed by Liberty of Bealton and Poquoson.
“To finish fourth in this tournament is a testament to the hard work these young men have put into practice and to my assistant coaches for the work they do day in and day out,” said Burton.
Luke Young, now 17-0 on the season, was the champ at 160. He won in impressive fashion, pinning his way to the finals and major decisioning Jordan Patterson from Brookville in the finals. Nick Young, Hunter Sell, and Jacob Brown also made the finals, but all finished second.
“They all wrestled quality matches and put up great efforts against very good opponents in the finals,” said Burton. “It will make them better in the long run.”
Jesse Hanson finished third at 285 in his first tournament action of the season.
“Jesse is a big boost to our program and it was good having him back on the mat this weekend,” said Burton. “He battled through some sickness to post a third place finish.”
Jacob Booth finished fifth in a very tough 182-pound weight class.
“He wrestled some quality matches this weekend as well and is improving each time out,” said Burton. “He’s trying to learn a little different style of wrestling after making a 30-pound weight class jump from last season’s 152 weight class.”
James River competed in the Madison County tournament last weekend. No results were reported.
After tonight both teams are off until holiday tournaments the last weekend of the year. River will host a tournament on December 30 and the Cavaliers will be in the Big Orange at William Byrd on December 29 and 30.
Also, both LB and James River will be in the “Cavalier Classic” wrestling tournament in Daleville on Saturday, January 6.
