With the end of the high school season, All-Region and All-State teams have been announced and James River was well-represented.
James River had three girls named first team All-Class 2 in softball after finishing the season as state runner-up. Austyn Moran was named first team as a pitcher, Elly Lackey was first team at second base and Jenna Pugh made it in the outfield. All three are seniors. Kaycee Kincaid, also a senior, was second team “At Large” from the Knights.
To the victor goes the spoils and Tazewell, who beat River in the Class 2 final, had the Player of the Year with pitcher Carly Compton and Coach of the Year in Tom Keene.
For the All-Region 2C team, Moran was named Player of the Year and River coach Steve Austin was named Coach of the Year. Also making the first team were Pugh, Lackey, Kincaid and Ripley Barry. Lexi McCullough made the second team as a “designated player.”
In baseball, River senior Heath Andrews was a first team All-Class 2 selection as a pitcher. Tucker Swails of Patrick County, who is also a pitcher, is the state Player of the Year and coach Tal Swails is Coach of the Year after leading the Cougars to the state championship.
Andrews was also first team pitcher on the All-Region 2C team and in addition was named to the all-region second team at shortstop. Colin Cook was named second team in the outfield.
River didn’t have any all-state soccer players, but did have a few who made All-Region 2C. For the boys, Justin Hill was named first team all-region and Levi Miller made the second team. For the girls, second team all-region honors went to Annabelle Peay, Natalie Hughes and Konner Myers.
