The James River baseball team was the 12th seed in the Region 2C tournament this week but the Knights looked nothing like a big underdog at Dan River Monday. The fifth seeded Wildcats had to hold off a game River team to take a 6-5 win in Ringgold.
Down four runs early in the game, the Knights rallied with three runs in the fifth inning with Jack Braun and Gabe Sebastino getting the big hits. James River then plated two more in the seventh on singles by Dalton Hall and Ben Bailey to tie the score at 5-5, only to have the Wildcats score an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off win.
“We are extremely proud of our boys tonight,” said coach Matt Gouker. “They have shown a lot of fight and heart for this game during this season. Tonight was definitely one of those heartbreakers. We saw this team come together and work well together here in the end. We are proud of the showing tonight and look forward to good things next year.”
River had 11 hits, including two each by Sebastino, Bailey and Colin Cook. Logan Campbell scored twice and Braun knocked in two.
Campbell started on the mound and pitched the first two innings. Zeal Hammons pitched the next four and Braun came on to pitch the seventh and took the loss on an unearned run.
The loss ended River’s season at 1-11. Their win was over a Glenvar team that advanced to the Region 2C quarterfinals on Monday with a win over Gretna.
