Roger Lee Johnson Sr., 74, of Roanoke, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at Franklin Health and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.
Roger was born in Eagle Rock on December 26, 1946 and lived in the Roanoke Valley all of his life. He was the son of the late Joseph R. and Dorothy I. Nininger Johnson. Roger worked in construction and enjoyed NASCAR, playing cards (especially Gin Rummy), classic cars, car shows, Mt. Pleasant area, and Andy Griffith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Carolyn Ray Ferguson Johnson; and his brother, Sonny Johnson.
Roger is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and Lynn Johnson of Vinton, Keith Johnson of Roanoke, and Scott and Trish Johnson of St. Augustine, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Caren and Robert Bailey of Roanoke; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lacy and Grace Johnson, Mac Johnson, and Nolan and Linda Johnson, all of Roanoke; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and Johnny Robinette of Marion, N.C., and JoAnne and Buddy Barton of Salisbury, N.C.; many nieces and nephews.
A service celebrating Roger’s life was held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 21 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church (White Church), 2357 Mt. Pleasant Church Road, Fincastle, with his brother-in-law, Gerald Ferguson, officiating. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery (White Church). The family received friends 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Rader Funeral Home, Daleville.
