Promotions and acts of heroism were recognized Friday morning during a ceremony at the Botetourt County General District Court courtroom, where the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office honored six employees for outstanding service and leadership.
Sheriff Matt Ward opened the ceremony by praising the dedication and daily performance of the department’s staff.
“We’re here this morning because we have a lot of promotions, and we want to recognize the outstanding performance of the employees that we have,” Ward said. “Promotions are not just a reflection of how long you’ve been here — it’s a reflection of the performance that you do every day for the citizens.”
Ward emphasized that the recognition extended beyond routine duties to extraordinary efforts performed under pressure and without hesitation.
“The public expects from us at a moment’s notice, under pressure, out of selflessness — and you just perform,” he said. “You don’t think about it. You just do it. And I’m proud of you.”
The ceremony began with presentation of the Life Saving Award to Deputy Jared Reinmiller for his actions April 21, 2025, while serving as an instructor at the Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy.
According to the citation read by Capt. Scott Gathje, Reinmiller observed a recruit suffering a sudden medical emergency during training. He immediately requested emergency medical support and initiated lifesaving measures.

His swift and professional response, working alongside other personnel, sustained the recruit’s life until advanced medical personnel arrived, the citation stated. His actions demonstrated “exceptional composure, situational awareness, and decisive action under extreme circumstances,” reflecting credit upon himself and the sheriff’s office.
Following the award presentation, Gathje read a standardized promotion certificate recognizing five employees for advancement within the department.
Deputy Kevin Smusz was promoted to sergeant. Sergeants Andy Mioduszewski and Anthony Lewis were each promoted to lieutenant. Deputy Vivian Lee was promoted to sergeant. Dispatcher Camille Moore-Matheny was promoted to lead dispatcher.
The ceremony concluded with applause, photographs and congratulations from colleagues, family members and community supporters in attendance.
