State Police Trooper L.R. Spencer is investigating a two-vehicle crash which resulted in two fatalities. The crash occurred on May 28 at 2:14 a.m. on Interstate 81, at the 167.6-mile marker in Botetourt County.
A 2013 Volvo tractor-trailer was traveling north on Interstate 81 at the 165.5-mile marker, when the vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway and struck the guardrail. The tractor-trailer jackknifed and overturned, blocking the roadway.
A 2020 Freightliner, also traveling north on Interstate 81, struck the 2013 Volvo after the initial crash. Both tractor-trailers were pushed off the right side of the roadway.
The driver of the 2013 Volvo was identified as Zerai Asfedai Almedom, 56, of Mint Hill, N.C. Almedom was wearing his seatbelt and died at the scene. The driver of the 2020 Freightliner was identified as Eric Russel Larson, 53, of Fort Worth, Texas. Larson was wearing his seatbelt and died at the scene. A passenger was not injured.
The Virginia State Police Crash Investigation Team responded to assist. The crash remains under investigation.Virginia
