Clarence Eugene “Gene” Sutphin, 95, of Troutville, made his ascent to heaven to his Lord and Savior on Friday, September 27, 2024.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Etta Sutphin of Laurel Fork, and brothers, Paul Sutphin and Claude Sutphin, and sister, Buelah Sutphin Turner. Along with many lifelong friends and other family members, we know they are rejoicing in the light of Jesus.
Gene was a lifelong entrepreneur and businessman. In 1960, Gene, along with his adoring wife Bunny, opened Gene’s Trading Post in Cloverdale, as well as the first flea market in the state of Virginia and many other shops in Roanoke, Hillsville and Troutville.
Gene taught his family that strength is found in compassion, that true power lies in generosity, and that the most important currency we have is our ability to care for one another. Gene’s life was a testament to what it means to live fully and generously. He was known to give to anyone in need, stranger or family.
While we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the incredible man he was—a man who, above all else, loved deeply, especially his Bernice.
