Cavalier girls win BRD swim championship
The Lord Botetourt girls took first place when the Blue Ridge District championship swim meet was held at the Gator Center in Roanoke last Friday. William Byrd won the boys championship and LB was fourth.
“What an incredible meet!” said LB coach Ashley Safrit. “Overall, there were 18 new PRs (personal records) on Friday. Amazing!”
It was the third year in a row the LB girls have won the Blue Ridge meet. This year Layne Jones and Hannah Mizuba were named female “Swimmers of the Year” in the district while Max Mizuba was the BRD male “Swimmer of the Year.”
Among the highlights was the girls 400 free relay team of Isabella Sanchez, Julia Misicko, Jones and Mizuba, who won the event and qualified for states with a cut time of 3:54.43. The Cavs also won the 200 medley relay with Jones, Olivia Nicely, Misicko and Mizuba.
Other firsts for the LB girls included Jones in the 200 free and 100 backstroke, Mizuba in the 50 free and 100 butterfly and Sarah Frederickson in the 100 breaststroke.
For the boys Max Mizuba won the 200 IM and 100 breast.
The Region 3D meet is scheduled for the Christiansburg Aquatic Center on Monday and Tuesday of next week.
Region 2C swim meet in Feb. 8
The Christiansburg Aquatic Center will be the site of the Region 2C swim meet, including James River swimmers, on Thursday, February 8. Swimming will begin at 6 p.m.
River was scheduled to wrap up the regular season with a meet at the Botetourt YMCA on Tuesday of this week. Last week the Knights swam against Glenvar and Northside at the Salem YMCA.
Taking first at the Salem Y last week was the girls 200 medley relay team of Cora Mullins, Drew Whitson, Sarah Lorman and Addison Jones. Whitson also took a first in the breaststroke and a second in the 100 freestyle. Sarah Lorman was first in the 100 butterfly and second in the 100 breast. Riley Persinger won both the 50 free and 100 back.
For the boys, Walker Wilson took second in the 100 back and third in the 100 free while Ethan Smith took a second in the 100 backstroke.
LB track team runs at RC this Saturday
The Lord Botetourt track team is scheduled to run at the East Coast Elite Meet at the Roanoke College Kerr-Cregger Indoor Fieldhouse this Saturday. Many schools from the East Coast are expected to compete.
Last weekend the Cavaliers attended the Heritage Middle School and Varsity Invitational. Botetourt had several athletes place first in their events, including Amelia Dietrich in the 1600m, Rye Jackson in the 500m, Ember Wiley in the 3200m, Kendal Howard in the shot put and the 4×400 girls relay team of Amelia Dietrich, Erna Dietrich, Riley Shupe and Madeleine Gantzhorn. Also, freshman runner Anne Thorne state qualified in the 1600m with a time of 5:33.51, which was a 20-second PR for her.
Botetourt had several athletes attend the Virginia Beach Showcase earlier this month. Two of the athletes ran away with new school records as TJ McGinnis broke the 55m record with a time of 6.61 seconds and Ethan Thorne broke the 3200m school record with a time of 9:32.30.
