The Lord Botetourt and James River swimmers opened the winter season when they participated in the traditional season opening Southwest Virginia High School Invitational at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center last Saturday.
The big meet included 29 girls teams and 23 boys teams. The Science Hill girls from Tennessee were team winners with LB ninth and James River 18th. Science Hill also won the boys meet.
“It was a great first meet,” said Botetourt coach Ashley Safarit. “We had a few PR’s and most swimmers were within just a second or so of their best times from last year.”
Highlights for LB included a first place finish for Layne Jones in the girls 100 Back in a time of 58.46. Layne also took second place in the 200 Free in a time of 1:58.52.
Julia Misicko, swimming in a high school meet for the first time, placed seventh in the 100 Free and eighth in the 50 Free. Olivia Nicely was ninth in the 100 Free with a personal best time. Botetourt’s 200 Medley Relay team of Jones, Anna Harris, Nicely and Misicko was sixth with a time of 2:05.14.
For James River, Walker Wilson placed fourth in the 50 Free with a time of 24:39.
Tonight, Wednesday, the Cavaliers will be back in the water with a meet at the Franklin County YMCA. Next Tuesday, December 12, LB is at Jefferson Forest and River swims at Christiansburg.
