Botetourt Sheriff’s Office to launch updated emergency alert system
Residents of Botetourt County will soon see an important change in how they receive emergency alerts and public safety information. The Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office is transitioning from the CodeRED emergency notification system to Everbridge, a new emergency notification system that offers greater flexibility for users, to ensure residents receive timely and accurate emergency information.
The new platform is part of an effort to modernize communication tools and ensure that residents are informed quickly during public safety emergencies.
“While CodeRED has served us well for many years, this move to Everbridge reflects our ongoing commitment to improving public safety,” said Sheriff Matthew Ward. “Everbridge provides us with a scalable, intuitive platform that better meets the needs of our dispatchers and the community, especially during fast-evolving emergencies.”
Enrollment in Everbridge is free and only takes a few minutes. All residents are encouraged to sign up for Everbridge to ensure they continue to receive important notifications. Residents can sign up online through the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office’s website at botetourtsheriffva.com or by scanning the QR code.
Those who previously signed up for CodeRED must re-register with Everbridge to continue receiving alerts. CodeRED will no longer be supported.
Sheriff warns drivers to drive sober or get pulled over
As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office will partner with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and other local law enforcement in the region for the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over high-visibility enforcement campaign. The goal is to deter impaired driving and prevent senseless tragedies
This Fourth of July is a time for family, fireworks, and freedom, but it’s also one of the most dangerous times of the year on roadways. Increased travel, celebrations involving alcohol, and distracted driving can quickly turn a holiday into a tragedy.
“This Fourth of July, make the choice to drive sober or get a sober ride home. Too many lives are lost each year over the July 4th weekend due to impaired driving,” said Sheriff Matt Ward. “We want to make it clear that on this Fourth of July holiday, we will have a zero-tolerance policy against drinking and driving. Designate a sober driver.”
Every year, the Fourth of July holiday ranks as one of the deadliest periods on the nation’s roads. As part of this national enforcement effort to deter impaired driving, the Sheriff’s Office will have increased patrols throughout the holiday weekend. Deputies will be on the lookout for signs of impaired or aggressive driving, and violators will be held accountable.
“Whether you’re heading to a backyard barbecue, the lake, or watching fireworks, make safety your top priority,” the sheriff said. “Never drive under the influence, obey traffic laws, and keep your eyes on the road.
“We want to remind everyone to celebrate responsibly and drive sober. Let’s work together to keep this holiday safe for everyone on the roads.”
