James “Jim,” “Butch,” Richard Tolley, Jr., 76, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2025, surrounded by family.
He was born on January 28, 1949, and spent his life as a loving family member, loyal friend, and dedicated community member. Jim, affectionately known as “Butch” by those closest to him, was a dedicated son, father, and grandfather, a man of deep character and integrity. He was always ready to offer a helping hand, share a laugh, or lend a listening ear. His kindness and generosity were a gift to all who knew him.
Throughout his life, Jim worked tirelessly, dedicating himself to his family, his passions, and his career, spending 49 years with the same company. He was also a dedicated sports coach and Boy Scout leader, positively impacting many young lives.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army with the 483rd Engineer Battalion and was honorably discharged. He also wore the distinctive unit insignia of the 4th Armored Division as a testament to his service. During his service, he was awarded the Air Medal four times, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, James R. Tolley, Sr.; his mother, Rena Tolley; and his sister, Diane McLane.
He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Underwood; his son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Kelli Tolley; daughter, Erica Tolley; step-daughter, Amanda Dollman; his grandchildren, Spencer Crowder, Ashley and Amber Dollman, Madison, Morgan, and Maggie Underwood, and Lakynn, Kase, and Millie Tolley; two great-grandchildren; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Bonnie and Earl Parker, Rena “BB” and Matt Wright, Tina and Mike Link, Janet Rogers, and J.E. McLane; his brother, Nelson Tolley; Brenda Tolley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jim’s life was held on Sunday, February 23, at 2 p.m. in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. when friends and family were invited to share memories and pay their respects. Jim’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his spirit will continue to live on in the countless memories and the love he shared with all.
