The GFWC Botetourt Town & Country Women’s Club has had a busy spring and will continue into the summer.
The club awarded college scholarships to Lauren Ogle of James River and Theresa Seibel of Lord Botetourt. Once again, the BTCWC will “adopt” a family that needs a helping hand. The first project will be to purchase “back to school” items for the children.
Another major project that the club is doing this summer is Operation Smile, a project of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. Operation Smile is a nonprofit organization that is based in Norfolk. Doctors , nurses and others travel overseas and volunteer their time to do surgery on children with facial deformities. The BTCWC members have made cloth dolls with no faces so that children can draw their new faces. They have collected small toys, play dough, bubbles and other items for the children to play with. They have also made smile bags to put the toys in, along with a wash cloth, comb and a small mirror (to see their new face). They also collected pens, clipboards and other office supplies. Members will be gathering for a workday to make blankets for the children. All these supplies will be delivered to the GFWC Virginia International chairman in August who will in turn deliver them to the Operation Smile headquarters.
The club will be having a yard sale at St. Mark’s Methodist Church in Daleville on June 24 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Some items in the sale include a Kenmore vacuum cleaner, housewares, purses, home decorations, jewelry, lamps, dishes and much more. All proceeds from the yard sale will used to fund club projects such as scholarships, Adopt A Family, donations to fire and rescue squads and other community projects
