LB boys are third in Region 3D track
The Lord Botetourt boys took third and the girls were eighth in the Region 3D indoor track meet Saturday. The meet was held at the Roanoke College Kerr-Cregger Fieldhouse in Salem.
William Byrd won the boys meet with 99.5 points, followed by Abingdon with 65, Lord Botetourt with 52 and Christiansburg with 45. The boys were led by the shot put duo of Kendal Howard and DJ Toliver, who finished one-two. Howard won the event with a toss of 54’8” and Toliver was second at 50’4.25”, his best distance ever.
TJ McGinnis won the 55-meter dash in 6.62 and teammate Zion Woody was third in 6.75. Sophomore Caleb Miller took second in the 55 hurdles with a personal best time of 8.20.
Ethan Thorne, a sophomore, placed in two distance events. He was third in the 3,200 meters and fourth in the 1,600.
In the girls meet four points separated the top three teams with Abingdon winning with 91 points. Byrd was second with 89.5 and Christiansburg took third with 87. LB scored 25 points to finish eighth.
LB junior Jillian Harris won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.48 while teammate Ratie Jensen was fourth in 9.78. Freshman Anne Thorne won the 3,200 in 12:02.76.
Those individuals will now head to the state meet at Liberty University on February 26 and 27.
River girls take sixth in region track
James River’s girls were sixth and the boys were 12th in Region C when Roanoke College hosted the Class 1&2 Region C&D track meets Friday. The Auburn boys and girls swept the meet for Region C.
River had two region champions in the girls meet. Junior Kelsey Firebaugh won the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.61 to win by two one-hundreths of a second. Kaia Binns of River was third in 7.77.
Junior Navaeh VanBuren of River won the triple jump with a hop, skip and jump distance of 34’10.25”. Navaeh was also sixth in the long jump, and she’s qualified for the state in the long, triple and high jumps.
Binns, Firebaugh and Ripley Barry finished fifth, sixth and seventh in the 300 meters and those three teamed up with VanBuren to finish second in the 4×200 meter relay. Drew Whitson was fifth in the 1,600 and Emma Bobbitt was fifth in the shot put.
In the boys meet River sophomore Gavin Binns was third in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.83, just 17 one-hundreths of a second off the winning time. Junior Aiden Bartulis also scored for River with a seventh place finish in the 1,000 meters.
The Knights will send five athletes to the state meet at Liberty University on February 28 and 29.
