[SUBMITTED PHOTO]VFW Post 1841, Daleville, recently awarded the winners of the annual Patriot’s Pen and the Voice of Democracy essay contests. Silas Whitson (far left) was first place winner at the Post and District levels for his Patriot’s Pen essay, so he received two certificates. His essay also placed third in the whole Commonwealth of Virginia, and he had an all-expense-paid trip to Portsmouth in January with his family to receive his awards. Next to Silas is Drew Whitson, first place winner at the Post level for her Voice of Democracy essay. Next to Drew is Tim Wilson, who won second place at Post level for his Voice of Democracy essay. Jerry Jacobsen (far right) is commander for VFW Post 1841 and also is the chair for the Post and District 6 essay programs.
