Virginia High School League winter sports officially begin this week. Both Lord Botetourt and James River will have teams on the floor, mat and pool to open the first week of the season.
On Monday of this week the Lord Botetourt swim team was set to open the winter season with a meet against William Byrd at the Gator Center in Roanoke. On Tuesday James River basketball teams had their first games. The boys hosted Riverheads and the girls were at Rockbridge County. Results were too late for publication.
Today, Dec. 3, both teams host wrestling matches. River will host a tri-match at 6 p.m. while LB also has a tri-match at home, beginning at 5:45 p.m., with Bath County and Pulaski County. The Lord Botetourt basketball team also has their first game, travelling to Jefferson Forest.
On Thursday, Dec. 4, the James River swim team has a meet at Hollins University.
Friday, Dec. 5, is a big day as both LB basketball teams play on the road. The boys go to Pulaski while the girls are at Wilson Memorial to begin a two-day tournament. LB’s girls will play Liberty Christian on Friday at 6 p.m. and their Saturday opponent will be determined by Friday’s results. Harrisonburg and host Wilson Memorial are in the other bracket and there is also a junior varsity division.
The River basketball teams are also in action Friday with the girls at Northside and the boys hosting Parry McCluer in Springwood.
The LB wrestling “B Team” will be in a tournament at Parry McCluer on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5 and 6, while the “A Team” will compete at Staunton River Saturday. The River wrestlers are in an invitational at Hargrave Military Academy on Saturday.
Both track teams also take the gun for the first time Dec. 6 with James River at Heritage High and Lord Botetourt at Liberty University.
