Ten students from Virginia Tech’s horticulture program, along with Scott Douglas, Director of the Hahn Horticulture Garden, visited the 1839 Wilson Warehouse in Buchanan on March 26 to develop landscape designs for the building’s grounds. The warehouse is headquarters of the Buchanan Town Improvement Society.
The students evaluated the present plantings, outbuildings and layout of the property, which extends from Lowe Street to the James River. As part of their course work, the students will present their designs to the society’s members in April. The grounds of the Wilson Warehouse, though extensive, are in need of renovation.
Renovation of the grounds is just one of the projects underway to upgrade the 185-year-old structure. Other projects include exterior painting and lighting, HVAC updates, restoration of the second and third floors and preservation of historical documents.
For many decades the Wilson Warehouse was a place for weddings, receptions, service club meetings and community events. It features a large, open event space and commercial kitchen. The space is available for rental.
The Town Improvement Society actively seeks new members as well as local and corporate sponsors. For information, call (540) 817-5772 or email: tis1903@gmail.com; Facebook: Buchanan Town Improvement Society.
