Lord Botetourt High School junior Dean Webb competed in the 10th annual Kicking World National Showcase event in Austin, Texas on December 2. The event is by invitational only for 68 of the nation’s top high school kickers, and it also had classes on training and a speaker on sports psychology.
This year’s event was attended by kickers from 26 states, even as far as Alaska, and represented the top 5 to 10 percent of the kicking specialists that earned recognition at one of their competitions. It was comprised of about half senior kickers and half sophomore and juniors.
The first day was charting and Dean made the top 10 list for the entire competition. On the second day, which is the elimination competition, Dean made the group of the final seven. They competed in a “punt off” and a kicker from Pennsylvania won the competition. There was a three-way tie for second place and Dean was one of the three juniors.
