Two members of the Lord Botetourt High School baseball team participated in the Commonwealth Games tournament at Liberty University last week, helping the team to a second place finish.
Rising senior twins Nathan and Owen Prince played for the West team and made major contributions. Nate was five for 10 at the plate with five runs batted in and Owen was five for 11 with three RBIs.
The West, coached by Rodney Spradlin, opened on Friday with an 8-6 win over the Central team. The West then beat the East team, 12-1, and the North, 6-2, on Saturday to advance to Sunday’s championship game against the North.
In the Gold Medal game the West lost a heartbreaker, 6-5. The North team scored four unearned runs in the second inning. West battled back to tie the game at 5-5 but the North scored the deciding run in the seventh on a pop up that was lost in the sun, a sacrifice bunt and a two-out single.
The West out-hit all four opponents, including a 9-8 edge over the North in the Gold Medal game. Sully Tibbs of Jefferson Forest led the West team, going seven-for-14 at the plate for the weekend.
