The Lord Botetourt and James River wrestlers will be participating in the annual “Highlander Invitational” wrestling tournament at Glenvar High School Saturday. Wrestling starts at 9:30 a.m. and the tournament will run through conclusion, estimated to be late afternoon or early evening.
A strong group of teams are included in the field, including defending champion Grundy. The Golden Wave had six champions in last year’s Highlander Invitational to dominate the field. Also competing will be Buffalo Gap, Carroll County, Chatham, Floyd County, Fort Chiswell, Graham and host Glenvar.
Lord Botetourt had a good run on the mats last week, starting off with a tri-match at Hidden Valley. The Cavaliers beat both Hidden Valley and Franklin County.
Then on Saturday, the Cavaliers competed in the Heritage Duals in Lynchburg. Botetourt went 3-1 on the day to finish third overall. Botetourt beat Western Albemarle, 67-9, Brookville, 45-36, and Virginia Episcopal School, 62-15. LB’s only loss was to Spotswood, 48-31, in the semifinals as the Cavaliers finished 13-3 on the season in duals.
Today the Cavaliers will compete in the Blue Ridge District tournament at William Byrd High School, beginning at 3:30 p.m. The jayvees will be in a tournament in Covington Saturday while the varsity is at Glenvar.
James River was off last week, but the high school team administered the “BoCo Winter Rumble” youth wrestling tournament for kindergarten through eighth graders.
