Every summer the YMCA of Virginia’s Blue Ridge delivers camp programs that offer area youth fun and unique experiences – the opportunity to explore the outdoors, meet new friends, discover new interests and create memories that last a lifetime. Thanks to a $10,000 grant from Wells Fargo, the Y was able to provide additional camp scholarships to assist families in the local community this summer.
“YMCA summer camp supports the social-emotional growth, cognitive development and physical well-being of kids,” says Kim Henderson, Development Director of the YMCA of Virginia’s Blue Ridge. “In our day camp, kids are in a welcoming environment where they can belong by building relationships, develop character and discover their potential.
“At the Y, we believe that every child should have access to high quality programs and that’s why we provide financial assistance to families who need us most,” said Henderson.
The grant from Wells Fargo was solely used by the Y to provide financial assistance to low- and moderate-income families who applied for a camp scholarship. The grant allowed for several local families to receive part or all of their camp tuition covered.
This past summer the YMCA of Virginia’s Blue Ridge offered five campsites across the region and had over 3,769 children attend camp. Of those campers, one of every four children received financial assistance thanks to funds received from generous donors and grants from community partners.
