This wooden fife is on display at the Botetourt Museum of History & Culture in Fincastle where it helps to tell the story of the country’s 250th anniversary. It was donated recently by Jeff Lahar and previously belonged to his great-grandfather, Rufus Boynton. Measuring 16-1/2 inches, it dates to the 19th century but is very similar to what would have been used during the Revolutionary War. Fifes and drums were crucial to regulate daily camp routines, communicate commands and boost troop morale. Their use originated in medieval Europe but they are still used today in re-enactments, bands and for pleasure.
