Local artist Mark Woodie donated this drawing of the back of the Luster Building to the Botetourt Museum of History and Culture where he is on the board of directors. Mark created his drawing during the 2024 inaugural plein air “Paint Fincastle“ event. This year it will be held on Saturday, June 7, with a rain date of June 8. It is sponsored by Open-Studios Botetourt and the Botetourt County Historical Society to encourage students and adults of all levels to paint and draw outside around historic Fincastle. Visitors are invited to come watch the artists from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A reception with light hors d’oeuvres and an exhibit by the artists will be held at the Museum from 3-4 p.m.
This drawing of the circa 1884 Luster Building from the back shows the apartments that are there. The bay window along Main Street was added by a dentist to provide more light for his office. It was then used by telephone operators who could share what was going on along Main Street in the days of switchboards. It is now owned by Woodsdale Events.
